Polk Speakers

Polk: one of a kind speakers with LSi quality.

Polk is one of the most common brands in speakers today. Virtually anyone who has done any speaker shopping at the local big box electronics store has seen a variety of Polk offerings on the shelves. With a very deep product line, Polk meets just about any need in home audio speakers -- and with a few products they meet needs that we didnt even know existed. Floor standing full range speakers and bookshelf speakers are just the beginning. They also make micro satellite and in-wall products, including an interesting in-wall subwoofer.
At the top of Polks line are the LSi speakers, which are available in either bookshelf or floor standing models and include a center channel, the LSiC. The LSi line are well engineered products, but at a high price of over $2000 for a pair theyre only for dedicated audio listeners. Still, for the relative build quality youre getting more for much less money than some of the really exotic brands with prices well beyond LSi proportions for competing speakers.

The LSi speakers are coated with classy cherry wood finished sides and black glossy finished tops. You can also choose ebony finished sides if you want to keep them all black. The LSi are highly regarded speakers in the industry, but Polks product line reaches way below them to much more affordable offerings that probably make good bargains, whatever price you paid.

In wall speakers are never a great idea if you can avoid it. Speakers arent designed to work built inside walls and there is a significant compromise in acoustic quality when you mount speakers inside walls. But if youre willing to pull out the stops at a little extra cost to properly dampen the enclosures in which the in-wall speakers will operate, you might have sound that is comparable to many box speakers.

Polks clever ceiling or floor 10 subwoofer design is guaranteed to fit seamlessly into your audio room without having to find room for a refrigerator sized box. The two-box enclosure system that goes inside the floor/ceiling requires a lot of space, but if youre able to mount these properly youll only see a small 2x12 grille which can easily be camouflaged to look like a standard vent.

Another unique offering from Polk are the IP address speakers. These are in wall speakers that can be given an IP address to your router and you can optionally connect directly through USB. You can actually feed their IP streaming audio from your music server. Its a unique design that perhaps not many people could imagine having much use for, but youve got to give Polk credit for trying something new. Next, we might suggest built in wi-fi instead of USB.
