Are Speaker Stands Worth the Cost?
Should you invest in speaker stands?
Speaker stands are home audio accessories which allow you to securely mount your speakers in a safe and secure position. There are numerous types available, including floor speaker stands which are ideal for surround sound systems, bookshelf speaker stands which let you place your speakers in small nooks and crannies, and adjustable speaker stands which let you vary the height and orientation of your speakers without having to dismount them. You can also get speaker stand mounts in several configurations, including tripod-style stands and base-mounted stands. But are they worth the cost?
The Pros and Cons of Speaker Stands
On a per-unit basis, speaker stands aren't very expensive. However, if you have an elaborate setup with five- or seven-channel surround sound, your costs will add up. Here are the advantages of speaker stands, which you should consider when deciding whether or not to buy them:
- Optimized performance. Speaker stands allow you to optimize your system by giving you added control over the orientation of your speakers. You can adjust them to viewing height, or tilt them to direct the sound upward and into the room rather than straight ahead; this is particularly advantageous if your system uses speakers which currently sit on the floor.
- Added security. Perhaps the greatest advantage of speaker stands is that they go a long way towards protecting your speakers. They are specially designed to hold your speakers firm and fast in the mounted position, so you won't have to worry about accidental bumps and pushes knocking your speakers down and possibly damaging them.
The only real down side to speaker stands is the fact that they require an additional investment, above and beyond what you've already paid for your system. However, if you want to optimize performance and protect your investment, they can be well worth the extra money.
If you're handy with tools, one way to save some money is to make DIY speaker stands from basic materials such as wood or sturdy plastic. DIY speaker stands are a great way to keep your costs down while enjoying all the security advantages these accessories offer.
