Yamaha receivers are a well-respected brand in home theater, known for their distinctive musical flavor. What else would you expect from a company that can make a piano?

Even the lowest-end Yamaha receiver features 44 DSP modes - which are equalizer presets - and this means a lot of tinkering for button pushers. That Yamaha's receivers tend to be rated at slightly lower power outputs than competing receivers shouldn't be seen as a sign of weakness but rather a sign of confidence in their ratings.
At the lowest end of Yamaha's line is the RX-V440 ($299) which features 6x75 watt channels of amplification and even offers extended surround formats. Weighing in at 25 lbs., it will literally crush Sony's 15lb. STR-DE595 despite being rated for 100 watts through 5 channels.

Price Points

Yamaha RX-V740. $599. Critically acclaimed receiver is capable of 4ohm speaker loads. Powers 6 channels at 90 watts through 8 ohms. This could be Yamaha's best value.
