Looking into Denons line of DVD players means youre looking at something with high end quality, a clear cut above the mainstream. Denon makes the finest DVD players available, and in terms of modern features coupled with a design crafted for high end audio and video quality, Denon is second to none.

Possibly the best DVD player made to date was Denons DV-5900 which came along to outdo their own legendary DV-2900. The 5900 is an engineering marvel, one of the first with HDMI outputs and capable of both high resolution audio formats, DVD-Audio and SACD. This makes the 5900 the true silver bullet application for the high res audio options. The ability to use the digital audio output capability of HDMI for DVD-Audio and SACD has been a long awaited feature that will allow users to circumvent the analogue outputs needed with most hi-res audio playback devices. Next, all youd need is a receiver with an HDMI input for audio for true digital hi-def sound.

Denon pulled out all the stops on their 5900, engineering separate circuits for DVD-Audio and SACD as well as regular DVD-Video duties. These are all performed on completely isolated sections of the player. As a high end component this unit weighs in at just over 27 lbs, making it one of the heaviest DVD players made, and it features Burr-Browns high end dacs for audio video conversion from media.

Of course Denons 5900 (now replaced by the 5910) is the no compromises option and it asks no compromises from your bank account to own one. The 5910 will run you $3500 to own. For a step or two down from the 5910 you can look into the 2910 (running around $600) or the 3910 (about $1500) respectively. If you must have the best of the best in DVD quality you cant go wrong with Denon.

Other names in DVD players have rated as highly in terms of audio and hi-fi and video performance: namely Arcam. Arcam is a competitor whose FMJ DVD players have been rated in Home Theater Secrets objective audio/video testing as one of the finest DVD players made, but they lack many of the key features that make Denons offerings so tantalizing, such as SACD playback and HDMI.

If time is not a consideration you might want to consider holding off and seeing what happens in the next gen optical format war. A clear winner between HD DVD and Blu-Ray has yet to be declared and either offering is sure to look and possibly sound better than any DVD from even the best DVD player. Either way you go, when the new storage formats start to arrive you can bet that Denon will be offering up the same high quality players that can do the new formats.
