DVD Basics

Some say DVD stands for Digital Versatile Disc, others insist it doesn't really stand for anything.

Pioneer began development of the new format in 1991 intended as a replacement for Laser Disc. Pioneer called the new technology Digital Video Disc but it's gone far beyond use exclusively for video. DVD has expanded into rewritable technologies, giving us acronym DVDR (for write once) and DVDRW (for rewritable).
Today DVD technology has become the digital storage standard of choice for home theater, computers, business and games.
