Basic Controls

It might come as some surprise that a lot can be gained when you know how to properly tweak the basic picture controls on a TV. Many people unknowingly set their TV to display an overly bright picture with exaggerated contrasts; it's as if subconsciously they're looking for a sense of hyperrealism from the display.

TV images should look realistic and detailed. TVs on the showroom floor of the local big box store try to hit you in the face with flamboyant images. They may get your attention in a bright store but those images aren't what you want in your living room.
Calibration DVDs like Avia are strongly recommended and will give you the best calibration tools and techniques with ample explanation as to how each works. If you're still unhappy with your TV's images even after tweaking the basic controls as outlined here, you should consult a television calibration professional.
