The popularity of Home Theater in Box (HTIB) systems never ceases to amaze me despite how
unanimously sub-standard they are. But if you’ve got no audio system at all the prospect of buying every single component for a complete home theater system is a little daunting.
I bet at any given time I can piece together a decent 5.1 system for $1K USD without dipping into HTIB. Someday I’ll do that right here.
There are many people who see the HTIB low cost, quick fix approach being for them. And who can blame you. No, HTIB is not optimal, it’s a compromise. But once you understand but even still the following are true.
- You have no current audio gear you wish to be part of an upgraded system.
- You want a decent sounding audio system, not be all end all
- You want the best value possible for your money
- You have no intention of this becoming a time consuming hobby
If these facts are true and here’s the kicker: If you also have only a smaller room to fill with sound something no larger than the around 20’x15’ which is approaching mid sized. Then maybe, just maybe HTiB is for you.
I get a lot of people asking about HTiB and the biggest piece of advice from the average consumer is the simple question.
“Is _____ HTIB system any good?”
Well, henceforth I’ll try to post some HTiB systems that show potential. I’m not saying these are comprehensive reviews or anything but they’re going to at least pass muster by publishing positive specs, being a sound name brand and having some key features.
