UK to get Visual Radio

Nokia’s Visual Radio service isn’t new to nations like Finland and Thailand but it’s about to get a boost internationally.  A mobile phone network called O2 teamed with Virgin Radio will deliver the Visual Radio service as early as next month for the first time in the UK.  Breathing new life into FM radio broadcasts, Visual Radio is an FM feed aimed at compatible cell phones that will show visual images directly from the broadcast.  Using the available mobile network you’ll also gain interactivity with your music.  Not only can you IM the DJ you’ll have access to artist information and bios.

Although several Visual Radio phones are available in the US, terrestrial Digital Audio Broadcasts haven’t exactly been wildly successful in North America.  It’s worth watching how well it does in the UK to decide if it’ll make an appearance on this side of the ocean.  Several FM stations across North America already send rather mundane digital information with their broadcasts.  FM listeners in certain major cities might even be surprised to know the station they already listen to is streaming some digital information along with the pop hits.
