Sony and Matsushita Electric are working on fully 3D video they feel will be ready for prime time by 2020.  This means fully three dimensional television where you’re able to look around and you’re completely immersed in high definition images. 

They plan on making this a commercial reality and to bring 3D video together with other technologies aimed at creating a complete virtual reality that doesn’t stop at images.  Part of the challenge is to recreate smell and sensations of touch and smell, so far they’re researching ways to accomplish this by use of ultrasound, electric stimulation and wind pressure.

Count me in!  Imaging getting the seat of your choice at any sporting event, you can even feel some drunk’s spilled beer from behind you, or maybe catch a foul ball with a level of interactivity.  Speculation of sporting events and home shopping networks are rather obvious lightweight use.  The real question is; how long before these holographic technologies are implemented on porn networks?  We could be witnessing the deterioration of the nuclear family as we know it.  As households become wired coupled with advances in AI it’s possible to have the doctor from Star Trek Voyager will be a reality sooner than we think.  “Please state the medical emergency”.
